ESPA Spa | Yas Hotel

The Yas Hotel has undergone a period of transition in recent months. Renowned as being the world’s only hotel to span a Formula 1 circuit and a property recognised for its striking architectural design, what was known as the Yas Viceroy until earlier this summer, has reverted to Marriott International and become Yas Hotel in the process (with rumors of further transitions into a W once this years Formula 1 season concludes).

Despite the upheaval in branding the ESPA Spa remains unchanged. A two-storey haven situated at the far end of the hotel complex, offering striking views over Yas Marina through floor to ceiling glass windows.

From the moment you enter, the ESPA spa represents a serene and welcoming space. A sleek reception desk stands in the middle, with a retail element located off to the left and a small waiting room to the right. While the waiting room with its low-slung soft furnishings, bulbous light fittings and potted candles may be smaller and less intimate than expected, this is by no means a pre-cursor to the spa experience at this particular hotel.

Once pre-treatment formalities are completed, guests are led up a waterfall-backed staircase complete with colourful illuminations and into the heart of the spa. Evidently there is no escaping the curves and structure of this architectural landmark and while the rest of the hotel is bright and modern, the ESPA Spa is modeled around a sense of tranquility and intimacy, featuring dark corridors lit by flickering candles which help to create an ambiance of calm.

The gentleman’s relaxation area offers much appeal, overlooking the race track and featuring lockers, spacious changing rooms, showers and a large communal space with sofas and a selection of infused waters for hydration. Most interesting are the collection of Metronap Energy Pods which can be utilised pre or post treatment, and the large jacuzzi (with its soothing jets and sensory LEDs) which should certainly be experienced should time permit.

Our recent trip to the ESPA Spa involved a 60 minute Swedish massage (AED 515) as a means to de-stress and revitalize. The massage begins with guests selecting their chosen oil for the treatment which is used not only for massage, but as vaporizer placed beneath the massage table. We select the rosemary and peppermint for our massage which includes back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs and head.

While there were a few items that detracted from the overall experience – the noise from the cars on the track disrupt the unique calmness the spa works so hard to create, and the uncomfortable massage beds – the guest transition throughout the spa is faultless,  making it feel as if you’re the only guest.

Having experience many of Abu Dhabi’s spas during our half decade in the UAE, what we really appreciated about our Swedish massage at the ESPA spa was the courtesy and professionalism of our therapist and the fact that she was not afraid to exert pressure (we usually request the firmest of massages). ESPA’s all natural products from the UK are used in all treatments and are premium quality and a trip to the ESPA spa makes for a sensory journey set amidst luxurious surrounds. All the more so thanks to a real slant towards gentleman’s spa, a rather unique prospect for the region.
