Zayna Spa at the Grand Millennium Al Wahda appears to be one of those Abu Dhabi secrets. A discreet word of mouth establishment that upon discovery, will make guests wonder why they’ve never heard of it before. Having lived in the capital for the past six years we recently ventured into an oasis of tranquility in the heart of the city that we were never aware even existed.
Perhaps it’s the misleading exterior, for let’s be honest, this particular hotel does not have the most attractive external facade. Located at a busy junction close to both the city bus station and Al Wahda Mall, the gargantuan property can be perceived as both intimidating and a little dated. Hence the small spa situated down a narrow corridor on the hotels third floor could easily be overlooked but persevere and there’s a rewarding wellness experience to be found.
Designed in natural tones the reception area wraps around limber stems of bamboo and a gurgling water feature. Both natural elements work together to set the scene for a relaxing spa journey. Pre-treatment formalities are completed on low-slung couches surrounded by a soundtrack of ambient Chinese percussion. We’re then met with infectious smiles and led past flickering candles and straight into the treatment room.
There are no segregated locker rooms and a sense of privacy is evoked by allowing guests to change within the treatment rooms, of which there are ten. The compact room is both simple and functional and features a deep tub, walk-in rainfall shower and small changing area. Lit in hues of electric blue it does feel more like a nightclub than a spa, but once the treatment commences and a state of relaxation takes hold, it’s possible you’ll barely notice.
It’s pleasing to see the Zayna Spa looking to attract a male clientele into the confines of this comforting space. For the discerning gentleman the spa features a number of treatments and bespoke massages especially for men, all of which can be customized to focus on particular areas of the body. Enticed by the sounds of The Chairman (an ELEMIS high performance skin energiser and ELEMIS muscle melt) we’re unfortunately bound by time constraints and settle upon the Swedish Aroma massage (AED 507).
We beginwith a foot scrub before moving onto a 60 minute massage that employs long gliding strokes, muscle kneading and friction techniques. We specify for the focus to be on the upper and lower back and find the pressure from our masseuse to be just enough to iron out the stress-induced kinks in our neck and shoulders. What we really appreciate though is the courtesy and professionalism shown by our therapist and while there’s often a sense of urgency to vacate the treatment room following a massage. At Zayna Spa, guests are encouraged to linger and elongate their experience, if only for a few additional minutes.
Being a city spa, Zayna is understandably unable to offer many of the facilities found in a resort property but what is lacking in terms of beach, outside space and additional facilities, is made up for in customers service. With the guest experience being primary, the transition through the spa is faultless and we felt as if we were the only guest (perhaps we were?) during our visit. Don’t let preconceptions cloud your judgement, Zayna Spa is worth a visit and offers good value for money when compared to some of the cities other five-star properties.

The Verdict: Zayna Spa
The Zayna Spa is possibly the nicest spot in the entire 840 room property. Providing a serene and tranquil space away from the busy streets below and one that goes to show that simplicity is key. A definite hidden gem in the world of Abu Dhabi wellness.
