Decadent – is the only word we can use to describe the opening event at La Patisserie Des Reves in Abu Dhabi’s Yas Mall.
Housed inside the prestigious Tryano department store, you wouldn’t even know that the quaint little patisserie even existed – unless you were in the know. The patisserie is currently one of Abu Dhabi’s best kept secrets – but we’re sure that’s about to change!
Despite being in a soft-opening phase for the past two months, the official launch of La Patisserie Des Reves was held on Tuesday evening for selected members of the press, media and blogging community.
Upon arrival, we were not entirely sure what to expect but we were more than pleased with the results. An amalgamation of vibrant colours, La Patisserie Des Reves is an elegant and charming space, which despite being open to the department store, still feels intimate and cosy. The white walls are splashed with hues of reds and pinks, whilst the upholstery is a mixture of striking greens, oranges and whites – reminiscent of a trendy rubix cube.
The warm and friendly staff welcomed guests with sparkling fresh fruit juices (strawberry, kiwi and our personal favourite, lychee). Each had it’s own distinct flavour and were presented in handled jam jars (which seems to be a common trend at the moment) and provided a refreshing and soothing hit.
Whilst waiting for other guests, we were actively encouraged to explore the restaurant. A number of surprises were scattered around the interior, from a toy train carrying fresh madeleines, to the baskets of bread – we were completely in awe of the presentation and attention to detail on display. The focal point of the store is the pastry counter which houses each French treat beneath huge glass bell jars – with all eyes immediately drawn to this futuristic display – it was certainly a talking point amongst guests.
As we perused the endless choice of intricately made pastries and desserts, the helpful staff were on hand to provide us with all the information we could need – from the ingredients, to the taste and baking method – the staff were knowledgable in all areas and could not be faulted.
The concept of the brand is simple – to evoke the taste of childhood favourite pastries and in the process, create new gourmet memories by modernizing the classics of the French patisserie. With branches in Paris, London and Tokyo – Abu Dhabi (and the MENA region) is next on the agenda for La Patisserie Des Reves. This opening in the Middle Eastern market, has required a significant change from the other worldwide stores in the fact that this is the first outlet to sell main courses and hot food.
What made the experience exceptionally special for us, was the fact that Thierry Tessier (the founder), dined with us and was on hand to answer any questions we had about the brand and the food. Teyssier spoke passionately about the pastries and wanted to ensure we tried as many of them as possible over the course of the evening.
La Patisserie Des Reves stands out from the crowd because the savoury items are on par with the sweet ones. We sampled Salade Halloumi – a combination of pan fried cheese, figs, strawberries, toasted pistachio and pomegranate. The flavours perfectly complemented one another and the nuttiness of the pistachio really worked well with the flavour of the halloumi.
We would also recommend the Linguini Champignons Et Huile De Truffle – a mix of linguini, wild mushrooms, artichokes, parmesan cream and truffle oil, that was an absolute delight to eat. Accompanied with freshly baked walnut bread, this is one dish we would quite happily devour again right now.
Rounding out the dishes we tasted was the Hamour Et Riz Au Safran – grilled hamour, zucchini, saffron and charmoule sauce. Each dish was meticulously constructed by the team of chefs and immaculately presented on the plate.
Now let’s talk about the desserts – the real reason the people are likely to visit this patisserie! All items are hand crafted on site from the in-house kitchen and are sumptuous works of culinary art – most of which look too good to eat.
Signature offerings included; The Paris Brest, The Saint-Honoré and The Éclair chocolat, which looks like a Christmas cracker.
Overall our evening at La Patisserie Des Reves was an insightful and elegant affair and dining with founder Thierry Tessier made for an exceptional three course meal, even if we did literally have to roll out of the door following our intake of delectable sweet treats.
