The Yas Hotel has become a bit of a curiosity in recent months. Previously operated under the operation of the Viceroy brand, the hotel currently remains in limbo under Marriott before an impending transformation into a W following this years Formula 1. A match made in heaven with its futuristic exterior woven with a canopy of rainbow coloured lights, the property couldn’t be more suited to the young and funky W brand. Admittedly, the F&B was not the strongest under the previous management but the service was always something to be admired and this key element has been retained.
With all eyes on Yas Island and this flagship property during the final weekend of November the Yas Hotel is under a great deal of pressure when it comes to impressing a clientele of international jet-setters and part of this hinges on the creation of inventive concepts that are likely to become cornerstones of the Yas Island experience. With much fanfare, the property have launched a new Saturday brunch, in addition to the already popular (and recently re-vamped) Friday Pit Stop brunch. A Saturday soiree in all-day dining restaurant Origins which has a firm focus on family.
For an all-day-dining spot Origins manages to deviate from the norm, presenting a modern space bathed in natural light. The supremely white decor may be slightly clinical but the minimalist style in perfectly keeping with the hotels design and features bold pops of colour in the upholstery and wall art. As the ONLY hotel in the world to span a Formula 1 race circuit, Origins has the distinct advantage of a spacious terrace overlooking all the action of the Yas Marina Circuit.
If you’ve been to the restaurant’s Friday brunch then you know what to expect. Towers of glistening seafood, a carvery featuring roast beef, salmon en croute and all the glorious trimmings, tables piled high with salads, Arabic mezze and an extensive bakery are just some of the delights which await brunchers. An Abu Dhabi brunch first is the bagel wall, almost avant garde in appearance that allows guests to select their bread (varieties include squid ink and raspberry) and fillings to create a bespoke sandwich experience.
While there were a few issues with temperature and mis-labelling of dishes, we really appreciated the way in which this brunch has adapted to cater to various dietary requirements. With a strong focus on gluten free, superfoods and healthy options, guests are likely to be very surprised that Origins have deviated from the expected international buffet.
With the focus on family, kids are well-catered for with a colourful replica train straight out of the pages of Noddy’s Adventures in ToyLand. The carriages of the train are laden with food, forming a buffet comprising of chicken nuggets, pizza, hot dogs, popcorn, a chocolate fountain and a worthy selection of healthy choices. In the centre of the room an area is set-up where kids can decorate cookies. A separate kids room, home to a fair-sized bouncy castle and video games, can also be found next door.
While the atmosphere is lacking when compared to the Friday offering and the beverage package reflects this with very few ‘adult’ choices, the Brunch Express is great for families. In addition to all of the activities within Origin’s, the brunch also includes pool access at the remarkable rooftop pool, making for an ideal way to wind down the weekend as the sun sets.
