AT25 Revisited | Marriott Downtown

AT25 located on the rooftop of the Marriott Downtown Abu Dhabi hotel is the latest venue looking to capture the all-important weekend breakfast crowd. With Saturdays (for many) revolving around lazy starts, a search for a good cup of coffee and the chance to relax over the ‘most important meal of the day’ before another working week kicks in. AT25 is looking to fill that breakfast void.

Running from 8am – 3pm every Saturday, AT25 certainly offers a unique vantage point from which to enjoy breakfast. The views from the 25th floor of this hotel perched at a busy junction close to Al Wahda Mall are quite remarkable. Through large glass windows we can take in the entirety of Abu Dhabi Island, from Reem in the East to Al Hudayriat in the West.

Small wooden tables and upholstered benches scattered around the hotel swimming pool make the dining space quite pleasant and the inviting body of water beckons. Making us wish pool access was included as part of this breakfast package (it’s not).

The breakfast menu offered is fairly concise and covers all the expected staples. Think French toast, pancakes and eggs cooked a variety of ways. All accompanied by a selection of hot beverages (more on those later).

There is a definite healthy slant to the menu and an emphasis on value for money. Bowls of Fresh Fruit Salad or a generous portion of Bircher Muesli or Homemade Granola are priced at a very reasonable AED28.

We begin with Nutella Pancakes (AED 56). An impressive stack of American-style fluffy pancakes topped with sliced banana, ice cream and a slathering of Nutella. The popular flavour combination works well here and the pancakes are nice and light. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Waffles (AED 56). Which despite a sweet caramel butter and mixed berry compote, are overly dry as a result of over-cooking.

The Crunchy French Toast (AED 56) however comes firmly recommend. Coated in Corn Flakes, the breakfast cereal provides a nice textural profile to the thick slices of brioche bread. Adorned with lashings of maple syrup and a strawberry salad, we are glad to have ordered this sweet delight in preference to the fully-loaded fry-up experience of the AT 25 Big Brekky.

The two egg dishes we try are in essence the same thing. With the only difference between the Italian Egg Topper (AED 60) with its sourdough, poached egg, pesto and heirloom tomatoes and the Absolute Avo (AED 65), being the avocado and Persian feta on the latter.

It doesn’t seem to matter as both dishes are rather good. The crisp sourdough comes nicely buttered and spritzed with lemon, while the duo of poached eggs are masterfully cooked, with the slightly firm white giving way to a velvety yolk at the touch of the knife. Breakfast goals at their finest!

It should also be noted that there is a pleasing international slant to the selection of dishes which include an Arabic inspired Eggs Benedict with chicken shawarma, a zaatar croissant and sumac hollandaise. Plus a Fried Roti with Indian spiced potatoes.

We would suggest that the prices of the hot beverages be reassessed as it does not feel in keeping with the low price point of some of the dishes. We’re surprised to discover that teas are priced at AED 29 and a cappuccino at AED 27 which are reflective of standard five-star hotel pricing but when the food dishes are of similar value. It feels as though something doesn’t quite equate.

Service is snappy and friendly with special care and attention given to younger guests. Hot chocolates for children are made without sugar as standard which will please a lot of parents and blankets were provided promptly when the weather took a slight turn for the worse.

AT25 is also home to the Marriott Downtown’s popular Eat, Play, Laugh Friday Friday Brunch and is the rooftop is fast becoming the venue of choice at what is predominantly a business-oriented hotel and the team have really capitalized upon the space (and the views) to great effect.

For a casual breakfast at a leisurely pace in the heart of downtown, AT25 is comparable to Cafe 302 but can’t quite usurp Tashas crown as our preferred place for breakfast in the city.
